Category filter - in the catalogue and in search results
CS-Cart lets shoppers filter products by features, but not by sections of the catalogue. It shows on the search results page most of all: a query returns products from a dozen categories in a row, and there is nothing to narrow them down with. This add-on adds "Category" to the store filters: the list holds only the sections the found products belong to, several of them can be ticked at once, and on a category page the same filter shows its subcategories.
Works in search where the stock filters know nothing about sections

CS-Cart 4.17.1+ all four editions, tested on 4.20.1
|
Why a store needs it
Store search looks through the whole catalogue at once: a query for "black" brings bags, golf clubs and camcorders together. The shopper scrolls through the listing because there is no way to narrow it down by section: CS-Cart filters are built from product features, and a catalogue section is not a feature.
The add-on gives the filters the missing axis - the category. On the search results page that turns a long listing into a clear choice: the shopper ticks the section and keeps the query they came with instead of starting the search over.
Search becomes navigation
The shopper picks the section right in the listing and does not lose the query. |
Sections without empty rows
Only the categories that hold found products are listed, as with every other CS-Cart filter. |
Several sections at once
Both "Laptops" and "Tablets" can be ticked: the listing adds the two categories up. |
No settings of its own
The filter is created where the others are and follows the same display rules. |

Where the filter appears
- • Search results. The main case: the list of categories is built from the found products and changes with the query.
- • Category page. The filter shows the subcategories of the section and narrows the listing inside the branch instead of taking the shopper elsewhere.
- • Feature pages and vendor storefronts. Wherever CS-Cart shows the filters block, the category filter works too.
- • Subcategory products. Included when the store setting "Show products from subcategories" is on - the same setting the category page itself follows.

How it works for the shopper
- • Step 1. The shopper searches and gets a listing from different sections of the catalogue.
- • Step 2. In the filters block they tick one or several sections - the listing updates without reloading the page.
- • Step 3. They clear the tick or pick a neighbouring section: the query stays, the listing is rebuilt.

What the administrator does
- • Create the filter once. "Products - Filters - Add filter", and in the list of product fields pick "Category" - the field the add-on provides.
- • The rest are the usual filter properties: the name in each language, the categories it is shown in, the number of variants before "Show more", the position in the block, the status.
- • The add-on has no settings. There is nothing to switch on, configure or maintain.

Compatibility
- • Cart-Power: Elasticsearch. When Elasticsearch serves the listing, the categories come from an index aggregation and the selection goes into the search query - the filter behaves the same way.
- • Stock CS-Cart search. Works with no extra add-ons and no external services.
- • All four editions. CS-Cart, Ultimate, Multi-Vendor and Multi-Vendor Ultimate; in Ultimate the filter stays within its own storefront.
- • Themes. The add-on changes no templates: the filter is drawn by the theme own filters block.

What is new in version 1.0
- • A filter by category for the category page, search results, feature pages and vendor storefronts.
- • Only the categories of the found products are listed.
- • Several categories can be ticked at once.
- • On a category page the filter narrows the branch instead of replacing it.
- • Support for the "Cart-Power: Elasticsearch" add-on.
- • The filter is created the standard way, in "Products - Filters".
Frequently asked questions
Is there anything to configure after installation?
Create the filter once: "Products - Filters - Add filter", product field "Category". The add-on itself has no settings.
Why is the filter missing on some queries?
It appears when the found products have categories. If the search found nothing, the filters block is empty - every CS-Cart filter behaves this way.
A shopper ticks a category while browsing another section - where do they end up?
They stay in the current section: the filter narrows its branch instead of replacing it, so picking a subcategory does not take them out of the catalogue they are in.
Are subcategory products included?
Yes, when the store setting "Show products from subcategories" is on (Settings - General). It is the same setting the category page follows.
Is the number of products shown next to a category?
Not in version 1.0 - the section name is shown. Categories with no products never make the list.
What happens when the add-on is updated?
The filters you created and their settings are kept: they live in the standard CS-Cart filters table.

Two add-ons that change how a store performs
Everything else we publish improves one screen. These two change the numbers: how customers find products, and how often they come back.
|
Add-on · Search & merchandising Smart SearchElasticsearch-powered search for large catalogues. The customer types two letters, sees products with images and prices, and buys from the dropdown — even after a typo or with the wrong keyboard layout. Visitors who use the search bar are 24% of traffic and 44% of revenue, and convert about 2.5× better than people who only browse categories. If search returns nothing, up to 80% of them leave.
| ||||||||
Try it on a live catalogue: open the demo store and search with a deliberate typo. |
|
Add-on · Mobile commerce PowerApp — mobile app for your storeA native iOS and Android app running on your CS-Cart data: the same products, prices, stock, promotions, reward points and orders. There is no second catalogue to maintain — everything stays in the admin panel you already use. A mobile site brings a customer in once; an app brings them back for free. Push notifications replace the retargeting budget you spend to buy the same customer a second time.
