Smart Search on Elasticsearch: a fast catalog and a search that finds
The add-on moves your CS-Cart storefront from MySQL to Elasticsearch — search, category listings, product blocks and filters alike. The search itself forgives typos, understands a wrong keyboard layout, knows synonyms and word forms, and finds the product even when the customer names it differently from your catalog.

What breaks in the stock search
The stock CS-Cart search matches a query against the beginning of a string in the database. It does not forgive typos, does not know synonyms, does not realise that a brand typed in Cyrillic is the same brand, and slows down noticeably as the catalog grows. A customer who reaches the search box is ready to buy: an empty result sends them to a competitor.
Typos and keyboard layout
«headphnoes» finds headphones, and cfvceyu finds Samsung: the add-on works out what was typed in the wrong layout. |
Synonyms and word forms
«telly», «couches», «sofa» lead to the right products. You keep the synonym dictionary; morphology is per storefront language. |
Search by product features
«sneakers size 43» is found even though the size lives in a product feature rather than in the name. |
Speed on a large catalog
Results in a fraction of a second on hundreds of thousands of products, including Multi-Vendor with common products. |

More than search: listings, blocks and filters
In CS-Cart every product listing is built by a single core function, and on a large catalog it turns into a heavy database query: a category with filters, the product blocks on the home page, the search results. The add-on intercepts that function entirely — the storefront reads a ready index, while MySQL stays the database you write to.
You choose where Elasticsearch is used with check boxes: product listings, product blocks, search results. Filter blocks follow the listing they belong to.
Category — 1.5 s
Instead of 8.3 seconds on MySQL. Measured on a live marketplace with a catalog of 779,000 products. |
Search — 1.1 s
Instead of 18.1 seconds. Same catalog, same page — only the source of the data differs. |
Filter — 1.5 s
Instead of 7.9 seconds. Picking a feature no longer makes the database recount the catalog. |
Home page — 0.9 s
Instead of 7.3 seconds: the product blocks on the home page also come from the index. |
Catalog depth stops costing time
Page 3, page 60 and page 200 of a category all open in the same time — 1.47, 1.54 and 1.42 seconds. On MySQL each of them costs about eight seconds: the deeper the page, the more the core pays for walking the rows.
Reads and writes move apart
Imports, ERP sync and price recalculations keep writing to MySQL while customers read from the index, so a nightly price feed no longer drags the storefront down. A product change reaches the search in about a minute.
What the customer sees
- • A search layer right in the header: products with prices and images grouped by category, plus categories, brands and vendors as separate blocks.
- • Suggestions as you type — from prepared phrases, from the real search history or from product names.
- • Recent queries and recently viewed products when the empty field is clicked.
- • A «did you mean» hint when a query returns nothing.
- • Animated hints inside the field itself, so the customer can see what to look for.
- • A full-screen or drop-down layer — your choice, both work on a phone.
- • A category panel: a list with counts or a filter with checkboxes — the customer narrows the results to the right categories without closing the window.
- • Price and brand filters inside the window: results narrow in place, with no trip to the results page; on a phone they collapse into buttons and never cover the products.
- • Two result views: a grid of cards or a dense list of rows — the choice is remembered for the visitor.
- • Highlighted matches in product names and a correction line when the query was typed in the wrong keyboard layout: "showing results for samsung".
- • Voice search: a microphone button in the field, speech recognised by the browser.
- • Keyboard use: "/" opens search, arrows move through the results, Enter opens the product.
- • A «nothing found» screen with a hint, popular queries and categories instead of an empty page.
- • A window in your theme's colours and font, with product code and stock on each card.

What the store owner gets
- • Query analytics. What was searched for, how many times and what was found. Separately — queries with an empty result: a direct list of what your catalog is missing.
- • Relevance control. Weight and typo tolerance are set per field: name, SKU, short and full description, product features.
- • Dictionaries for your niche. Synonyms, stop words and prepared hints, with import and export.
- • Morphology per language. Each storefront language gets its own word-form algorithm.
- • Relief for the database. Listings, product blocks and search move to Elasticsearch; MySQL is left to handle writes.
- • Control over «Often searched». Variants of one query are merged on their own, and an unsuitable query is hidden from the block with one action in the search history.

How it starts
STEP 1
Connect
Enter the Elasticsearch address, user and password. Tick where the index is used: listings, blocks, search. |
STEP 2
Index
Run a full synchronisation — the command is ready in the settings. After that the index maintains itself on a schedule. |
STEP 3
Tune the results
Adjust field weights and add synonyms based on what the search history shows. |

What's new in versions 2.8 and 2.7
- • 2.8. A query of one or two letters is searched as typed, and the other keyboard layout is tried only when the query as typed finds nothing. A word typed only partly in the search window finds products whose names start with it.
- • 2.8. Catalog promotions lower the price in categories, blocks and search, as on the product page, including promotions created after indexing.
- • 2.8. Marketplaces with common products: a common product in categories and blocks shows the price from vendor offers, as without the add-on, and child variations no longer appear as separate cards.
- • 2.8. Two new settings. "Out-of-stock products at the end of lists": products in stock go first, and each group keeps the chosen sorting. The background behind product images in the search window can keep the theme colors, be removed or use a custom color.
- • 2.8. UniTheme2: the color filter and the bottom panel on phones look as in the theme itself, and the header search field and the variation icons on the product page display correctly.
- • 2.7. The storefront no longer hangs when Elasticsearch is down or overloaded: the add-on waits for it at most 5 seconds, switches the catalog and search to the store's own search for a minute and returns to Elasticsearch by itself.
- • 2.7. Marketplaces: a storefront with warehouses and common products no longer hangs, and the filter block in categories with only common products and the autocomplete suggestions no longer go missing.
What the add-on does not do
Stated plainly, so there are no surprises after the purchase.
- • It does not install Elasticsearch. The add-on connects to it; the server is yours. We can set it up — that is separate work.
- • It does not work without a scheduler. The index is kept current by cron jobs.
- • It does not move the product page, the cart or checkout to Elasticsearch: listings, blocks, filters and search come from the index, everything else still comes from MySQL.
- • It does not restyle your store. The search window takes the theme's colours and font and sets its own layout; a heavily customised theme may need spacing tweaks.
- • It does not run alongside Cart-Power Live Search: enabling Smart Search disables that add-on automatically.
Compatibility
CS-Cart and Multi-Vendor 4.17.1 – 4.21.1, all four editions. Elasticsearch 8 and 9. Responsive and UniTheme2 themes. Updates through the CS-Cart upgrade center.
Installed by Cart-Power
We deploy this solution ourselves: set up Elasticsearch, build the index and tune the results for your catalog. From the product page you receive the Add-ons Manager, which delivers the add-on itself and its updates.
Price
The price is per licence for one store, in US dollars; no subscription and no per-query fees.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a monthly fee, like with cloud search services?
No. The add-on is bought once, the search runs on your server, the number of queries is not limited, and your catalog data never leaves your infrastructure.
Do I need a separate server for Elasticsearch?
Not necessarily — Elasticsearch can sit next to the store. For a catalog of hundreds of thousands of products we usually recommend reserving memory for it in advance; we will advise on your configuration.
How long before a new product appears in the search?
A change goes into the synchronisation queue and reaches the results in about a minute, so the catalog mode can stay switched on permanently.
Will it cope with a catalog of hundreds of thousands of products?
Yes — that is what it is built for: the figures above were measured on a live marketplace with 779,000 products and 848,000 documents in the index.
What happens if Elasticsearch becomes unavailable?
The storefront keeps working: the add-on waits for Elasticsearch at most 5 seconds, then hands the catalog and search to the store's own search for a minute and returns to Elasticsearch by itself. The error is written to the add-on log. The settings let you move any context — listings, blocks or search — back to MySQL.
Does it work with Multi-Vendor and several storefronts?
Yes. All four editions are supported, along with common vendor products, a separate index per language and per storefront, and a staged rollout to one user group.

Two add-ons that change how a store performs
Everything else we publish improves one screen. These two change the numbers: how customers find products, and how often they come back.
|
Add-on · Search & merchandising Smart SearchElasticsearch-powered search for large catalogues. The customer types two letters, sees products with images and prices, and buys from the dropdown — even after a typo or with the wrong keyboard layout. Visitors who use the search bar are 24% of traffic and 44% of revenue, and convert about 2.5× better than people who only browse categories. If search returns nothing, up to 80% of them leave.
| ||||||||
Try it on a live catalogue: open the demo store and search with a deliberate typo. |
|
Add-on · Mobile commerce PowerApp — mobile app for your storeA native iOS and Android app running on your CS-Cart data: the same products, prices, stock, promotions, reward points and orders. There is no second catalogue to maintain — everything stays in the admin panel you already use. A mobile site brings a customer in once; an app brings them back for free. Push notifications replace the retargeting budget you spend to buy the same customer a second time.

While we build A named project manager reports progress on a fixed schedule. You always know what is in work and what is next. |
|
Before release A separate QA pass on every release — the developer who wrote the code is not the person who signs it off. |
After handover Documentation for everything we ship, plus a warranty on the modifications and the project. |
Tell us what the store needs to doDescribe the task in a couple of sentences and we will come back with options, a scope and a price. The consultation is free, and we will say plainly if a ready-made add-on already solves it.
